MY PRACTICE EXPLORES THE TENSION BETWEEN EARNEST EXPRESSION AND ARTIFICIALITY. I AM INTERESTED IN HOW SINCERITY IS SUBJECT TO BECOMING CLICHÉD THROUGH THE LENS OF PERFORMATIVITY IN RELATION TO THE PROCESS OF ART-MAKING, INVESTIGATING THE STYLISATION OF EXPRESSION THROUGH GESTURE AND THE MOVING IMAGE.

Through a prioritisation of playfulness, I look at the language in the moving image which has come to signify ‘sincerity’ to celebrate that which is considered the seemingly opposite: Pop and Kitsch. I am interested in questioning this ‘sincerity’ through taking it apart. For this, I use the DIY aesthetic against itself, employing it to carry out exaggeration and gimmick rather than as a way to de-establish illusionism. I borrow from the typology of pop and entertainment as a statement against the hierarchical understandings of the Fine Art moving image in relation to its entertainment-based iterations. I want to highlight that there is a fallacy within this, in the assumption that this visual transparency is synonymous with earnestness. With this, I aim to go back to basics-- to merely celebrate of the act of art-making. Most importantly, however, at the core of my practice, is the desire to have fun and a bit of a laugh.
